Club Origin and History:
On the 29th of November 1969 a meeting was held at the home of Flip and Adri de Bruin, where the Pretoria fanciers decided to establish a Show Committee. The first show was held in Pretoria from the 7th to the 9th of May 1970 on the Old Student Sport Grounds, in Moscastreet, next to the Pretoria Zoo. On the 3rd of October 1970 at 15:00 a meeting was held in the Eendtacht Hall in Potgieter Street Pretoria, and the Northern-Transvaal Region of the South African Fancy Pigeon Association was established. On the 6th of October 1971 another Club was established, named the Pretoria Show Pigeon Club. This Club was an additional Club to the Northern-Transvaal Fancy Pigeon Club, with the main aim to be able to have more shows and to award better prices. According to all indications this Club only existed for a period of two years.
The SA Botternek Tumbler (Tortoiseshell) was developed and bred by the late Boet (Jan) and his son Louis van der Walt of Pretoria Gardens. The SA Botternek Tumbler was finally accepted as registered breed at the 1992 South African Championship Show. At a meeting held on the 7th of November 1997 a decision was taken to declare the SA Botternek Tumbler the Official Emblem of the Northern-Transvaal Fancy Pigeon Region.
On the 3rd of October 2005 it was the 35th anniversary of the Region and it was celebrated by hosting the 59th South African Championship Show from the 6th to 10th of July 2005 in Pretoria, at the Pretoria Show Grounds in Hall C. This was the first South African Championship Show where all the pens were arranged in single layers and Pierre le Roux, the National President of the time, words were, “this is what a Championship Show is supposed to look like”.
Northern-Transvaal hosted the 65th South African National Championship Show in Pretoria from 5 to 9 July 2011.
On Satuday, 17 November 2012, the long outstanding issue of merging the Gauteng and Northern Transvaal regions was finally implimented, with the members electing to call the new club "North of the Vaal".
Some background on the new name: "The Vaal" as such, refers to one of the larger rivers in South Africa, which forms a natural boundary between the Free State Province to the South, and the old Transvaal Province on the North. The old Transvaal, from where the club originally got its name, being in the northern part of Transvaal, has since been broken up into more, smaller regions now known as Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West province.
