TRUMPETER AND TOY CLUB – LAWN SHOW HELD ON 12TH NOVEMBER 2011 (Compiled by Freddie Theron, edited by Johan van Hengel)
After a long time overdue, a meeting / lawn show was organized by the Trumpeter and Toy club and held on the 12th November 2011 at the home of Freddie and Hannalie Theron – Hanfred Boerdery. Some old and new members attended – Free State, Gauteng and Northern Transvaal being represented. Unfortunately Peet and Sandra Botha from Mphumalanga could not come due to job requirements. Eddie Quick also could not attend due to the same reason. It was Gert Holtshauzen’s birthday and he could also not attend.
The following persons were present:S.Patterson (Chairman), W. van Niekerk (Secretary), Freddie Theron, Gert Venter and new members: Christo Nel, Johan van Hengel, Nollie en Ettienne Oosthuizen. Peet Botha also joined in his absence. The fact that, for the first time in many years, the total number of members has increased – serves as proof of the fact that there is a will to resurrect especially the Toy to again become one of SA's most popular breeds.
There are some more members that we would like to join because of their previous track record related to breeding, show results, etc: Hendri Botha, Gert Holtshauzen, Eddie Quick (with other Trumpeter breeds) and anybody else that might be interested.
Decisions taken on actions to grow the TTC club:
· Advertise the TT club in "Die Sierduif" as also in the "Duiwenuus".
· Placement of more articles regarding the Trumpeters and Toys - by ALL members: share successes, problems, etc.
· Have more lawnshows
· Plan a specialist show
· Feedback column after shows – discussion on the winning birds, constructive criticism where needed (all to gain more knowledge and insight regarding the different Toy and Trumpeter breeds)
· Support the new Webpage created by Johan van Hengel – more exposure to our club
Toy Standard:
Die dispute regarding the eye colour of the SA Toy was eventually cleared up at the Annual General Judges meeting 2011. The new proposed SA Toy standard must be translated and sent to the secretary of the judges forum for publication and implementation.
General:
· The two trophies of our club: Best Trumpeter / Toy on Show and Best SA Toy on Show are missing. Nollie was asked to trace them.
· No TTC rings were ordered for 2012 but it was decided to re-introduce them for 2013.
· The size of the current F- rings is too small. The Ring master will be asked to investigate if a bigger ring can be purchased.
Before and after the meeting there was also some serious pigeon discussions going on. The guys could also casually sit around the table , with a show pen in the middle and discuss the birds. First up was the English Trumpetter that was viewed from close up, with emphasis on especially the depth of body as also the power in the neck, mane and head. Various ET’s could be placed in die ring to discuss certain aspects and also demonstrate them. Unfortunately, as is the case with muffed birds in breeding season, most birds had their muffs clipped and only the young birds could serve as an example. Various imported ET’s could be used to indicate where our local birds still needed improvement. We have actually already come a long way, and some of the local birds are actually just about on par with the imports. Quite a few of Freddie's young ET’s were looked at, and some are of excellent quality.
Later that afternoon Wikus presented the approved standard foe the SA Toy and all aspects were discussed in detail. The group participated enthusiastically and each one now knows what the standard is all about. The eye colour was also discussed in depth. Unfortunately there were only two Toys that could be discussed, and their muffs were also clipped. The various aspects of the standard could however stil be emphasised. the ET’s were also used to demonstrate the differences in especially the head, body and muffs. Johan van Hengel took home the two toys, reason being that he again wanted to start breeding SA Toys. The standard will be published at a later stage.
After the discussions, the fire was started and we had a braai with boerewors, buns and salads (thanks Hannalie!) The boerewors and rolls were sponsored by the Club. And of course, a couple of cold ones! It was a good meeting and it was decided to do it more often.
We hereby want to invite all breeders /keepers of the SA Toy and the Trumpeter breeds to contact us and consider joining the club. The Club can only grow and survive with ACTIVE members, more can be offered to members when there is input and discussions from members using different forums, such as Die Sierduif, meetings, lawn shows, etc. Please feel free to contact Wikus or Steward with any ideas for the way forward.
